Week Three of Farming (Mr. Whiskers makes his entrance)!!
Wow! These weeks really slip by fast; I can't believe I only have 1 more left! This week continued to challenge me especially with the added difficulty of heat. However, I have good news to report on my goal of patience! As you may remember last Thursday consisted of some grueling leek planting. I was worried that this meant I wasn't growing my patience, but... on Friday we had to do the exact same thing and it went so so much better. Nearly 2 hours passed without me even noticing and I actually moderately enjoyed myself (as much as you can planting leeks)! Going into this week I was curious to see how Lyn and Juvencio dealt with the heat and what it meant for the plants. I happily surprised to realize that they too felt the heat as much as us and gave us lots of water/shade, and time in the walk-in cooler :). Also side note: never go in a greenhouse when its over 75 outside, they are literal saunas. In other news, we got to do some fun new vegetable harvesting, namely onions! Also a fun new goal that's emerged for me is my fear of bugs. I've had a longstanding hate for all bugs, but this work has forced me to deal with that. And I have to say, I'm showing marked improvement! I've had multiple spiders on me (something that previously would have really freaked me out) and have reacted quite calmly. And I even encountered TWO snakes without flinching!! Overall, this was a great week and I feel like I'm learning a ton about farm life and myself.
PS There's new cat that's appeared on the scene, MR. WHISKERS, who is giving Chang a run for her money in sweetness... I will try to snap a picture next week!

Spiders and snakes, oh my! Glad there are cats and dogs to even things out. I appreciate that you are thinking about the weather both in relation to people and to plants and considering how the whole system of the farm works together. I wonder how the increase in patience and the increase in tolerance for bugs relate to one another--is it simply a matter of increased exposure yielding greater patience, or are you also working on changing the way you react to these challenges?
ReplyDeleteNice job working on your patience, as well as your fear of bugs. Enjoy the last days of your senior project! Wendy
